Phase Two News

06/12/09 UPDATE
Fast-forward a year! It's been unclear whether the extension of Cloverlane Rd (Hunt Club Dr to Carpenter Rd) is open to traffic because the various blocking materials have been being moved by work crews and .... who knows whom. But speaking with Officer Ritchie Coleman and others at Pittsfield, it's apparent that the road will eventually be open to traffic - maybe even this summer. Apparently, the County is okay with the developer making the road publicly accessible will they're working on building houses. When the road finally opens (and before, when you decide to sneak through) please be mindful of the fact that there are many area children who have been using that road for bike riding and many others who have been taking advantage of no vehicular traffic on that road so that they can go for evening walks. The posted speed limit will likely be 25 mph through there and, according to Officer Coleman, that stretch of road will be under the close scrutiny of Pittsfield Twp squad cars.

Two basements and driveways had been poured, as of early this week, and the roundabout has now been paved with concrete. One lot has been marked "sold" but there haven't been any improvements to the property.

Another word of caution: please beware that since the Phase Two area is a construction site, when the carpenters start showing up to frame houses, there are likely to be nails littering the roadway. You've been warned!

If you hadn't noticed by now, a good chunk of the woods between fields 2 and 3 (field 1 is closest to I-94, field 3 sort of wraps around the Connor Dr/Ct end of phase one, and field 4 hasn't been planted -- it's become a haven for foxes, coyotes, skunks, 'possums, raccoons, and lots of different kinds of birds....oh, and a campsite with a firepit....but I digress). Turns out the county road commission apparently convinced Livonia Builders that it would be best to go ahead and put in the road. I haven't been able to get anything out of Danny Veri about their plans, but judging by how poorly the housing market is doing, I'd be shocked if they started putting in infrastructure (sewer lines, drainage, electrical, gas, etc) this summer. My guess: that won't happen for another year or more.

It's kinda neat seeing how they go about building a road. The first thing we noticed were survey stakes marking travis points - that came in March or so. Then, in May, a silt fence appeared. At the end of May, orange plastic fencing started to appear and, finally, right at the beginning of June, the "weapons of mass destruction" appeared. This thing can saw a tree trunk at the ground, grab the trunk and lay the tree down in a convenient place for the next machine to do its work. That would either be the grabber on the end of this tractor (here's the grabber), or this ginormous chipper. The end result - deforestation. I wonder what the deer are thinking, right about now.

I noticed that three tractor-scrapers had arrived, today.

Still trying to find information about the building plan at the road commission's website. (More on that soon - I'm playing phone tag with my contact at the county....)

Carpenter Road construction is moving along nicely. It'll be really nice to have bike lanes on either side of the road. It takes about eight minutes to pedal from ARCA to Meijer....it'll be much safer once the sidewalks are complete and the Cloverlane extension is completed.

Stay tuned for more updates.

According to Sheryl Siddall at the Washtenaw County Road Commission, in light of the Carpenter Road widening project (now under way), the Road Commission has had discussions with Livonia Builders about coordination options for the Cloverlane extension to Carpenter Road.  At this time, Livonia Builders has not applied for nor obtained a permit from the Road Commission for the extension.

In a November 15, 2006 email, Danny Veri confirmed that Phase 2 has been put on hold; the developer is looking into doing something later next year. Another year to enjoy having nature in our backyards....and another year to do battle with ferocious weeds! Make of it what you will.
